Hotel Packages.

Our
weekend family are on the mailing list for Choice Hotels
and every now and again we receive a bargain deal. As
an example, a bank holiday weekend in a big old hotel
in Redditch, a Quality Hotel and part of the same group.
£250 for four days and four nights including dinner,
bed and breakfast, and a packed lunch. The restaurant
food was excellent, a good hearty breakfast and the
packed lunch comprised a sandwich, apple, crisps, chocolate
bar, biscuit or cake and soft drink.

So, the all inclusive deal saved us at least £60 per
day in food. Certainly a candidate for the UK's cheapest hotel.
... Unless you know different?
Let's
take a look at advertised bargain hotel rate. If it advertises
£45 per night, read the small print, it is likely to
be per person - pp pn or pppn per person per night. If the
cost is per room, then it is likely to be in large print because
they are a bargain. Room only means just that, no breakfast.
If
the room is free on the proviso that you eat at least one
meal in their restaurant, ask to see the menu relating to
that deal. The best deals are when there is no other menu
than their standard menu. This means that you are not eating
at inflated prices to subsidise your free room.
There
are clubs that you buy a book of hotel vouchers. The cost
for the book covers all the hotel rooms. Caveats vary so before
parting with money for a book of vouchers look at all the
small print. Call a hotel and ask if they accept such vouchers
and what the deal really is. If you are on a tight budget,
there's nothing worse than being presented with a hefty bill
upon departure because you ordered from the wrong menu or
accepted the kind offer of a newspaper.
