Helicopter Flights UK
What
to do at the weekend, What's on at the weekend?
Helicopter
Lessons - flying a chopper
There's something exclusive about flying a helicopter, all
forms of aerial activities are exciting whether it be hot
air ballooning, gliders or even a jet, but the chopper is
different!
It all starts with helicopter flying lessons and needless
to say the weather plays a big part in planning any helicopter
flight. Like James Bond; to fly helicopters you need to be
cool, calm relaxed,
is this you?
Remember that your helicopter pilot didn't buy a chopper and
get a free licence; he spent many hours studying the theory
of flight as well as actually learning to fly a helicopter.
The good thing about your taster session was that there was
no need to sit at a desk studying notes and taking exams,
this experience is designed to thrill and excite you the start.
You'll have a briefing and safety talk over cup of coffee
before strolling onto the landing pad. It is likely that your
helicpter flight will be in Robinson R22 dual-seat with a
160BHP engine capable of speeds of up to 83 knots, that's
close to 100mph. The Robinson R22 is fairly compact so you
are a bigger than average person, tell the helicopter flying
school prior to booking, they may have larger choppers!
Your helicopter pilot will go through the controls before
taking flight. The new word in your vocabulary is going to
be 'cyclic'. I asked a qualified helicopter pilot what the
'cyclic stick' did. (Have you ever wished you never asked?)
this is the official response.
"The pilot and gunner cyclic
sticks have a built in operating friction. The cyclic control
movements are not mixed, but are transmitted directly to the
swashplate. The longitudinal cyclic control linkage is routed
from the cyclic stick through the SCAS actuator, the dual
boost hydraulic actuator to the right horn of the fixed swashplate
ring. The lateral is similarly routed to the left horn. Control
"feel" is provided by the force trim units. The
fore and aft movement also changes the synchronized elevator
attitude to assist controllability and lengthen c.g. range."
What he actually meant to say was this.
"The cyclic stick and the long t-bar are the controls
to changing the direction of the rotor disk, thus making the
helicopter move left or right or tilting the nose up or down,
and make it fly faster or slower. The rotor disk is the whirly
thing that flies, whilst you in the cockpit dangle beneath.
"
Car drivers may notice the handbrake lever next to the seat,
forget breaking, this is connected to the throttle and needs
only gentle lifting to accellertate or slow down the flight.
There are foot pedals that playa part in steering too.
So, imagine
both you and the pilot in the cockpit. Click on the seat belts
and a systematic pre-flight instrument check, the throttle
is opened up and the powerful downward force of air from the
rotor blades will case vibration like you ave never experienced.
The cockpit will sake under the increasing pressure until
eventually the pilot releases it into the air where it instantly
becomes a graceful aircraft. In a few moments
you might
just take control!
