Gliding Lessons UK
What
to do at the weekend, What's on at the weekend?
Gliding,
also known as soaring isn't just a recreational activity but
a competitive sport too. Equally gliders are also called sailplanes
purely because of the sensation of soaring un-powered through
the skies.
The skill
of gliding is mastering and controlling the aircraft without
any artificial power. Until you get up in the silent skies,
you cannot imagine the freedom, stunning views and the sheer
enjoyment of controlling a glider.
The UK
has gliding clubs spread through every county. Whilst many
glider pilots are more than content to fly their glider locally,
others take to the skies and fly long distances cross-country,
often competitively.
Gliders
are generally launched by "aero-towing" and "winching"
but your first flights or gliding lessons are likely to be
by aerotow, then later with a few gliding hours and further
training you will mainly use the winch.
During gliding lessons you first learn how to control the
glider in the air but quickly move onto landing and launching.
Staying airborne is simple, locate air that is rising faster
than the glider is descending, it is called a thermal. Gliders
can also climb in the air by rising up a ridge or by using
standing waves that sometimes form downwind of mountains.
